Who are we? United Martial Arts Center (UMAC) has been serving the Denver/Englewood area since the 2001 and has a well-earned reputation for being a community-oriented business that cares. Offering classes to kids and adults, fitness boxing/kickboxing, and self-defense: the focus is on safety and fun. (Yes, really! Martial arts training can be fun and not harsh or fear-based like you see in the movies). Taking from the best of research, we know that we learn best when our brains are engaged and we are enjoying what we’re doing.
Where are we? Check us out at our new shared facility, inside the Englewood Anytime Fitness studio located at 155 W. Hampden Ave (near Hampden and Broadway).
What do we do? We teach a variety of martial arts styles in a blended-style martial arts curriculum. UMAC’s positive philosophy was created by nationally recognized self-defense expert and motivational thought-leader, 4th Degree Black Belt Master Instructor Theresa Byrne, to be one where students are taught using encouragement and positive energy to become amazing human beings. “Leading through love” is what she calls it.
That’s how we all grow best, when we’re supported and loved to achieve more than what we thought possible. And yes, discipline is still part of encouragement, parents. In fact, we help teach self-discipline through the use of our research and experiential based methods, ones we’ve used successfully for thousands of students over the years. We’ve run successful programs for over 12 years at such amazing schools as DU’s Ricks Center for Gifted Children and Montessori School of Denver.
Martial Arts is applying ancient principles to modern living: helping people achieve what they never thought possible. Here. Today. Now.
How could training benefit YOU?
Working out with a purpose, helps you to use your muscles as never before, and gets you in the best shape of your life. Learn how to be in control of your mind, body and emotions with the intent, direction and skill to understand how to live powerfully.
What is empowerment?
Never be a victim. Learn highly effective and powerful self-defense skills that will protect yourself, family and friends. All this in a fun, friendly environment that will also improve your flexibility, endurance, and physical vigor!
What styles or systems do you learn? UMAC incorporates a combination of techniques and principles from a variety of Martial Arts styles including Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Hapkido, and weapons styles which provide our students with a well-balanced, practical based self-defense system. Combining the best of many styles into a blended system gives UMAC students the advantage they need to protect themselves in virtually any situation.
Our program is a total package combining strength, endurance and flexibility . We incorporate the latest exercise physiology, which assists in the development of all your muscular systems, building greater strength and definition. We give you excellent cardiovascular conditioning, expanding your heart and lung’s capacity while you burn calories without even thinking about it. The result is a tremendous increase in energy, giving you what you need to last all day long. Each class also includes a variety of stretching exercises that help you to avoid injuries and keep you feeling young and agile.
Adults of all shapes, sizes, and ages come to us, and those who stay will achieve their goals. Whether you’re interested in fitness, self defense, or whatever, we’re here to help you!
We train our students to the best of their ability – all that is expected of you is your willingness to try!
Little Ninjas, Children’s Martial Arts, and EZ-Defense!
“A caring and encouraging place for parents to trust bringing their kids to learn about martial arts.”
“My son could not stop talking about his first class for a week! And he cleaned his room! The instructor asked him to ‘show’ thank you for signing him up for lessons so he went to town on his room. Wow! Thank you!”
Come watch a class, join in, or try a week. No pressure. We love teaching and it shows in how we teach, we want the kids to develop an appreciation for martial arts and see that discipline can actually be fun! Crazy, right? But when they learn the value of doing a good job on something because it feels good, or putting in effort toward something they want: their whole world shifts. It’s an amazing transformation to watch.
Age Specific Curriculum: It really matters. At different age groups, we are all developmentally working on different things. We have different needs. We know how to address those needs and add challenges as children build on their success.
At UMAC we pride ourselves in understanding the unique needs of different age groups. UMAC instructors are members of the Martial Arts Teachers Association allowing our staff to be on the cutting edge of teaching philosophies to better assist children in being all they can dream.
While we train in several different arts, we follow a code of ethics used in martial arts called “tenets”. And we repeat them in every martial arts class. The tenets give a framework of who we want to be as human beings first and martial artists second. Not only does training enhance the body and mind but it can also uplift the spirit through practicing the philosophies stressed by becoming an amazing person.
- Courtesy– respect, manners: always treat others as you would like to be treated.
- Integrity– Be honest with yourself. Always stand for and do what you know is right.
- Self-Control– Focus your thoughts; control your emotions, your body and your physical and mental reactions.
- Perseverance– Keep working toward reaching your goals and obtaining your dreams no matter how hard or far away they seem. Never give up!
- Indomitable Spirit – Unbeatable spirit. If you get knocked down, either mentally or physically, always get back on your feet.
Additionally, by learning martial arts, kids learn skills such as:
- positive self image
- anger management
- respect for self and others
- improved mental focus
- motor skill development
What children would do if they had a magic wand…
Our Little Ninjas Program is a detailed curriculum that focuses on improving preschool-age children’s basic motor and listening skills. These skills will help them enter society with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook. They will become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. We believe the time between the ages of 3 and 7 are the most important years of a child’s development. Our program will enhance positive development in a fun and motivating way.
- positive self image
- anger management
- personal self defense
- respect for self and others
- improved focus & concentration
- courtesy through martial arts
- leadership training
- goal setting

*Women’s Only Self Defense Workshops (POW)*
Have you ever wondered what you’d do in a situation if you needed to get safe? Have you watched movies and wondered if you’d know how to defend yourself if it came to that?
These seminars are entirely different from most self-defense classes (especially for women) because they’ve been created and instructed by a woman. One who also just happens to be a nationally recognized defense expert. This is considered Level 1 in our Adrenal Stress Training Curriculum, there’s no adrenal training in this workshop, as there is in our FAST Defense Coursework.
Guess what! Self defense doesn’t have to be hard core, attack driven or frightening! You don’t have to be made to “feel the fear”, get beaten up, or made to feel small or powerless to learn how to fight back.
By using empathy, humor, simple techniques and real life success stories, the instructor provides methods that can stop a potential attack before it starts. You can learn and practice physical moves, and understand the Spectrum of Defense before anything EVER happens to you.
Seminar will also cover ways of assessing dangers of would-be attackers, and finding non-confrontational methods of dealing with uncomfortable situations, the kind that show up in our lives everyday.
Everyone should learn the basics of Self Defense…how predators think, what they look for, and how to PREVENT an attack!
This class also focuses on things women face on a daily basis, things like comments and actions made to make them feel uncomfortable. We’ll show you how to react positively to those experiences!
ABC’s of Self-Defense: Awareness – Boundaries – Combat move basics
Theresa Byrne, a 20 yr. veteran of Martial Arts & a 4th Degree Black Belt and certified Master Level Instructor
Incorporating self-defense components from a variety of martial art disciplines, this seminar offers the student the Best of the Best. With this unique perspective the instructor helps students identify, react, and disable threats with skills they can incorporate into their everyday lives…allowing them to feel empowered with the knowledge of how to defend themselves and their families.
